Privacy Policy
SpeedReader Pro ("SpeedReader", "we", "us") is a speed-reading app operated by [Your Company / Legal Name]. This policy explains what information we handle, why, and the choices you have. In short: the app works fully without an account and keeps your reading on your device; creating an account adds optional cloud sync; and our optional Scholar feature sends passages of what you're reading to an AI provider to generate study notes.
1. What we collect and why
Reading data stored on your device. Books, articles, and text you add, your reading position, bookmarks, and settings are stored in your browser (IndexedDB / local storage). This stays on your device unless you sign in and enable sync.
Account information (optional). If you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored as a hash by our authentication provider). We use this only to sign you in and to sync your library across devices.
Synced library (optional). When signed in, a copy of your library — book titles, authors, the text of items you added yourself (uploads, pasted text, saved articles), your reading progress, and bookmarks — is stored on our servers so it can follow you across devices. Books from public-domain catalogs are re-fetched by their identifier rather than stored in full.
Scholar (AI) feature (optional). When Scholar Mode is on, we send the title and author of what you're reading and short passages of its text to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate briefings, explanatory notes, and chapter recaps. Generated notes may be cached so the same book doesn't have to be regenerated. We do not send your name, email, or account details with these requests. AI-generated content can contain errors and is labeled as such in the app.
Diagnostics and feedback (beta). To keep the app working we record technical events: a random per-session identifier, the app version, your browser's user-agent string, the page you were on, error messages and stack traces when something breaks, and usage events such as "reading started". If you send us feedback, we store the message you type, the optional email you provide, and the screen you were on. We do not record the text of what you read in diagnostics.
Server logs and security. Like most services, our hosting and API receive your IP address with each request. We use it for security and rate limiting. For our own rate-limiting we store only a one-way hash of the IP and the date, not the address itself.
2. What we don't do
- We don't sell your personal information.
- We don't use advertising trackers.
- We don't read your library except as needed to provide sync, to respond to a support request you make, or as required by law.
3. Who we share data with
We use a small number of service providers to run SpeedReader. Each receives only what it needs:
- Supabase — authentication and the database that stores synced libraries and diagnostics.
- Anthropic — the AI model behind Scholar (receives titles, authors, and passages, as described above).
- Vercel — hosting for the app and its API.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr — deliver fonts and a few open-source libraries; your browser requests these directly.
- Public-domain book sources (such as Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, and the Internet Archive) — when you browse or download a book, your request goes to those catalogs, some via our server.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or security of users or the service.
4. How long we keep it
- Local reading data stays on your device until you delete it (Settings → Clear all data) or clear your browser storage.
- Account and synced library are kept until you delete your account.
- Diagnostics are kept for a limited period (currently up to about 60 days) and then removed.
- Cached AI notes are stored as long as they remain useful and are not linked to your account.
5. Your choices and rights
- Use it without an account. Everything except cloud sync works signed-out.
- Turn Scholar off at any time (top bar toggle or Settings) to stop passages being sent to the AI provider.
- Export your data. Settings → Export library downloads your library, progress, bookmarks, and settings as a file.
- Delete your data. Settings → Clear all data removes everything on this device. Account → Delete my account permanently removes your account, your synced library, and diagnostics tied to your account from our servers.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU/UK under GDPR, or California under the CCPA/CPRA) you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or port your data, or to object to certain processing. You can exercise these using the tools above or by contacting us. We won't discriminate against you for exercising them.
6. Security
Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS). Synced data is protected by per-user access rules so one account cannot read another's. Server credentials are never exposed in the app. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
7. Children
SpeedReader is not directed to children under 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your region), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
9. Changes
We'll update this policy as the app evolves and note the date at the top. For material changes we'll give notice in the app.
